SNOW DAY! (and other stuff)

I haven’t updated in quite a while but I’m going to start from today and work backward. Today was one of the best days I’ve had in the city so far. It was a SNOW DAY! The first in 5 years they say. I spent the day sleeping in and then I went sledding in the park with some of my other teaching friends. I’ve never been sledding before but it was a blast. I came home soaking wet but enjoyed every minute of it after the long weekend I had grading.

Last week was one of the longest weeks I’ve had teaching so far. The first week back from the break left me with tests and papers to grade as well as papers to fill out. I did get some good news though – I get to teach AP Environmental Science next year!

During mid-winter break I went to Miami for a few days. It was a great break from the cold and NYC. I spent tons of time outside. It was great to relax for several days and (try) not to think about work. I didn’t do any work for a whole week!

Overall I feel like I’ve already become a better teacher since the year began. I’m getting better at keeping track of what is going on in my classroom and asking the right questions that lead to students’ learning. I feel like I’m making some quality bonds with a lot of my students as well. I’m handling the workload better and better. Since the new year I’ve been making a point of cooking more and that of course means I’m eating better. I’ve been getting more sleep as well. I definitely feel  like I’m getting the hang of this.

I may not love this city and my job but I am making strides daily. Days like today help with enjoying this city and every once in a while something good happens at school that makes me feel the same way about school. Maybe I can make it longer than I thought.

A new pace

The past couple of days have been a complete change of pace. Since midyears have started I haven’t done any work at home and I’ve left work on time. It’s nice to get work done at work. I actually went to a nice dinner last night! I NEVER go to dinner in the middle of the week anymore. It’s great!

On the other hand, I’m going crazy! I don’t know how to sit still like this! I have all sorts of time on my hands and even time at work! I have no papers to grade until Monday. So I have almost a whole day tomorrow to do what I want. I can plan lessons for next semester and get my grades ready to turn in. I love it and hate it at the same time.

Classes at Lehman start on Monday. I’m NOT looking forward to that. Sitting in class for over 2 hours every Monday is not something I’m interested in. Maybe I’ll learn something this time…

Sick!

I’ve been lying in bed for 2 days doing nothing! Even though the end of the semester is next week I feel like I have everything under control. I’ve kept up with my grading so I don’t have too much left. I just need to figure out a couple of review lessons before the midterm. I can do that tomorrow though…for now I’m enjoying lying in bed and watching too much tv!

Welcome back!

What a day! I just finished working and I never stopped moving all day until lunch! My morning was so hectic. The printer in our office was still out of ink so I tried to go downstairs and log onto another computer to print but the bell rang before I was expecting it because I forgot it was a conference day! Luckily my class I wanted to make copies for was in a computer room so I made due and printed out my 18 copies on the printer while the kids were getting settled and turning in work that was due. After that fiasco I spent my next planning period running around getting papers I needed for the rest of the day. I had a couple of minutes to sit and organize my desk that already has a growing pile of work on it! The rest of the day went a little better. I was so worn out by the time 9th period came! After sitting through the useless meetings (I’ll post a rant on that later) I got to go home and get started on my grading! Only 4 hours of that done tonight with more to go still! AH!! What a way to start out the week…

I survived!

I’ve survived the first snow storm of the season!! It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Even though I had to walk home from school in the middle of it on Friday! It looks like it’s going to be colder in the Midwest than it is here while we’re gone so coming back to it should be a piece of cake!
I did A TON of work this weekend to catch myself up so I can do nothing while I’m with my family. (There’s a wish). I’ve graded all my papers (too bad I’m going to get a ton more tomorrow😦 ) I made the test I’m giving after the break. I have all my lessons planned for the next 2 days. I hope they go well. I’m going to get observed…
2 more days of hard work and then family time!!!

A day of opposites

Today was looking to be a fun day. We had a holiday concert scheduled during the school day as well as the food fair after school. However, one of our students committed suicide last night. I was not prepared to deal with this! I’m taking my students to a memorial tomorrow during school. I have to watch my students deal with the loss of one of their peers. I never thought I would have to deal with something like this!

7 teaching days left!

I’m eagerly counting down the days until the break and seeing my family but as I realize the growing list of things that need to be accomplished my joy is diminished. Another round of observations are coming around next week. We’re hedging our bets on which class she will come into. One of my classes is working on the computers individually from now until break so that class is out of the picture. Normally she comes into the Regents classes but last time she started hitting electives. That scares me! Normally, I barely have control over that class and DO NOT teach in the style they want me to (aka inductive reasoning). I was planning on starting a case study of Emperor Penguins to finish up before the break. I was going to show March of the Penguins but showing a whole movie is frowned upon so I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m still definitely going to go over the test on Monday. If she comes in then, she comes in then. There will be no Do Now or Aim for the day but that’s just the way it happens sometimes. We’re also being pressured to start and finish a unit on digestion in the Regents class. I’ll have about 6 periods of teaching available to do it in. Barely enough time!

I spent about 30 minutes of my friday contacting parents of freshmen in my classes who are missing work. It was too much! I got one good response, hung up on twice, and left a dozen messages. I sent out some e-mails instead of calling to some parents and did get some good responses out of that. If only students would turn in their lab reports! It would save me time. Don’t they realize it’s all about me!

In the real world, I’ve been doing ALL of my christmas shopping on-line. It’s been nice becuase it saves alot of time for me. I’m going to venture out this weekend though to finish it up so Ben and I can celebrate Christmas before we leave for vacation! I’m getting EXTREMELY excited about seeing my family but also EXTREMELY nervous for Ben. Having Christmas dinner with 20+ members of my family and friends at one time is a bit overwhelming!

So much to say/do/think…

So I know it’s been forever since I’ve updated but I hit a wall of exhaustion/frustration/stress and have been barely keeping up with my work as it is.

So parent-teacher conferences were good. Couple of long days but overall very productive.

This led into the weekend Ben’s parents were here. It was nice to see them and spend time with them but I got NO work done the entire weekend and didn’t get to catch up on my sleep. So that made the next week extremely long.

Lately I’ve been having a hard time motivating myself to do work until the last minute. For the first couple months I was really good at lesson planning for the week on Sunday and grading my papers the night I got them and things like that but now I’m happy if I get 2 days of lessons done on the weekend. Papers are slowly piling up on my desk at school and at home that I need to grade. I’ve hit a wall.

One of the other new teachers is leaving. He has to go home and take care of some personal things. It really bums me out though because he’s in the same boat as me. He just graduated and is a teaching fellow as well. His desk is right next to mine and we ride the train home together after school. He was my guy to go to vent and such and now he’s leaving. The other teachers are great but he’s the only one who knows exactly how I feel because he’s the only one who is in the exact same boat as me.

It’s a week until our 3 year anniversary. I’ve been dating Ben for 3 years! wow! So we’ve blocked out Sunday to spend together and do a whole bunch of nothing as of yet. If the weather is nice we’ve mentioned going to central park. It’ll be nice to spend some time with him. Since I hardly see him. Friday we had a date night and went to see Cirque du Solei. It was AWESOME. I would highly recommend it.

Well back to work for me. It was nice to have today off and get some rest and relax. I did get to have lunch with Ben during his break today. That was nice.

2 weeks until Thanksgiving!

parent-teacher conferences

So tomorrow and Friday are parent-teacher conferences and I am not excited. While most of my students are doing really well I have a few who are struggling. Some of the parents may get upset at this. My worst nightmare about parent-teacher conferences though is a parent questioning my ability and such because of my age. I don’t know how to respond to this and such so I’m just hoping it won’t happen.

Parent-teacher conferences are also making my day tomorrow sooooo long! I have my normal school hours but I’m taking my animal behavior class to the zoo for lab like I normally do on Thursdays. So we take the public bus to the zoo and then I have to take it back to school and then I get dinner from the parents’ association and then parent-teacher conferences start. I’m not going to get home until after 9! I leave at 7! AHH! What a long day!

Ben’s family is coming into town this weekend too so I’m loosing a ton of the time I normally spend grading papers and planning so I can spend it with them. I’m doing extra work this week so I can at least get through the first couple of days next week until I can catch back up on planning. It’s making for one long week so far though!

long awaited update

I haven’t written in a while mainly because I’m SUPER busy! I’m constantly grading and planning. Even if I do my planning on the weekend I still tweak it and find visuals and powerpoints every night! It’s exhausting. Even with the 3 day week last week and the four day week this week and next I’m barly keeping up with work. The first marking period is over today so I’m getting all my grades together. That’s a whole other headache. I’ve been entering my grades in my spreadsheets but actually calculating the grades is a nightmare!

I’ve been sick this week as well. I don’t know where it came from but it SUCKS! I was in bed and asleep at 7 yesterday. I came home exhausted again today even though I’m feeling slightly better. Hopefully sleeping in tomorrow will help me out. I need tomorrow to do my homework for my class! I’m a mess right now!
